Oahu Beyond Waikiki: The Best Things to Do on the North Shore of Oahu

If you are planning a trip to Oahu and only staying in Waikiki, you are missing the best part of the island. The North Shore is where Hawaii feels most like itself. Here are the spots that completely won me over.

If you are planning a trip to Oahu and only staying in Waikiki, you are missing the best part of the island. The North Shore of Oahu is where Hawaii feels most like itself. It is laid back, wild, and impossibly beautiful. From sunrise coffee stops to beach hopping and hidden local gems, this is exactly how I recommend spending your time on the North Shore.

The real magic of Oahu lives up here. The pace slows down, the waves get bigger, and everything feels a little more authentic. If you are looking for the best things to do on the North Shore of Oahu, start here.

Start Your Morning at The Sunrise Shack

One of the best ways to experience the North Shore is by starting your day early. The Sunrise Shack has become a favorite for a reason. Go right when they open for soft golden light, fewer crowds, and one of the best acai bowls on Oahu. I highly recommend the Blue Dream Bowl.

After grabbing your bowl, you have options. Laniakea Beach, also known as Turtle Beach, is nearby and perfect for an early morning stop. Or take it over to Sunset Beach, which is also just minutes away, and enjoy breakfast with your toes in the sand. Starting your day here flows perfectly into a full day of beach hopping along the North Shore.

Grab Coffee at Lucky's Coffee Shack

For a more local coffee stop on the North Shore, head to Lucky's Coffee Shack. It is slightly tucked away and less crowded, which makes it feel even more special. The Banana Barrel Latte is a must try, and the outdoor seating overlooks the mountains in the most beautiful way.

If you are looking for aesthetic coffee spots on the North Shore of Oahu, this is one to add to your list.

Beach Hopping on the North Shore

One of the best things to do on the North Shore of Oahu is beach hop. Each beach has its own personality, and if you plan it right, you can experience several in one day.

Start at Laniakea Beach in the morning. Then head to Sunset Beach around midday. Finish your afternoon snorkeling at Sharks Cove. Spacing them out like this gives you the best lighting and helps you avoid peak crowds.

While you are exploring, make a quick stop at Banzai Pipeline. You cannot swim there due to the powerful shore break, but it is incredible to watch the massive waves and the insanely talented surfers who take them on. It is one of the most iconic surf spots in the world and worth seeing in person.

Important tip. Go to Laniakea early, around seven in the morning, if you want to find street parking. Parking is extremely limited and closely monitored, so always read the signs carefully. If parking is full, you may need to wait for a spot to open up. And always remove valuables from your car for safety.

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting the North Shore

If you want to properly explore the North Shore of Oahu, rent a car. It is absolutely worth it. Many of the best beaches and local food spots are spread out, and having your own transportation makes everything easier.

Pack reef safe sunscreen. It is required in Hawaii and helps protect the coral reefs and marine life.

Before heading out for the day, stop at Foodland and pack a cooler with fresh poke bowls, snacks, and plenty of water. It makes beach hopping so much easier and keeps you from having to leave your perfect sunset spot.
